Losmen: A Classic Drama Series That Captures the Essence of Javanese Culture (English Version)

Losmen is a drama series that aired on TVRI from 1986 to 1989, telling the story of the Broto family who runs a guest house in Java. The series was created, written and directed by the duo Tatiek Maliyati and Wahyu Sihombing, and starred Mieke Widjaja, Mang Udel, Sutopo H.S., Mathias Muchus, Ida Leman, Eeng Saptahadi and Dewi Yull. All of them were well-known actors, actresses and theater directors who delivered captivating performances and realistic dialogues. The series was praised for its engaging plot, authentic setting, and rich values.

The series follows the daily life and struggles of the Broto family, who manages a guest house called Losmen Srikandi. The family consists of Pak Broto, the cheerful and musical father, Bu Broto, the wise and caring mother, Tarjo, the confused and ambitious son, Pur, the eldest and unmarried daughter, and Sri, the youngest and divorced daughter. Each episode features a different guest who stays at the guest house, bringing their own stories and problems. The Broto family tries to help them as much as they can, while also dealing with their own issues. The series explores various themes such as family, love, friendship, culture, tradition, modernity, and social issues.

One of the main themes of the series is the contrast between the traditional and the modern, as represented by the guest house and its surroundings. The guest house is a symbol of the Javanese culture, with its gamelan music, Javanese language, and Javanese attire. The guests, on the other hand, come from different backgrounds and regions, bringing their own perspectives and lifestyles. The series shows how the Broto family and the guests interact and learn from each other, sometimes clashing, sometimes harmonizing, but always respecting each other. The series also portrays the challenges and opportunities that come with the changing times, such as education, career, marriage, and technology.

Another theme of the series is the importance of family and community, as shown by the close-knit relationship of the Broto family and their neighbors. The series depicts the joys and sorrows of the family, as they support each other through thick and thin. The series also highlights the role of the guest house as a place of hospitality and friendship, where the guests are treated like family and often become part of the community. The series celebrates the values of kindness, generosity, and compassion, as exemplified by the Broto family and their guests.

The series showcases the character development of the main characters, as they grow and change throughout the series. For example, Tarjo, who starts as a naive and aimless graduate, eventually finds his passion and purpose in life, as he becomes a doctor and helps the people in need. Pur, who initially feels insecure and lonely, learns to love herself and finds happiness in her own way, as she becomes a successful entrepreneur and meets her soulmate. Sri, who suffers from a broken marriage and low self-esteem, regains her confidence and independence, as she pursues her dream of becoming a singer and finds a new love. The series also shows how the Broto parents adapt and cope with the changes in their children’s lives, as they balance their roles as parents and individuals.

The series has a lasting impact on the Indonesian television industry and the Indonesian society, as it is considered one of the best and most popular drama series of all time. The series has a loyal fan base, who still watch and enjoy the series until today. The series has also inspired several spin-offs and remakes, such as Losmen Bu Broto, Guest House: Losmen Reborn, and Hostel: Losmen Reborn. The series has also influenced the Indonesian culture, as it introduces and preserves the Javanese culture to the wider audience. The series has also raised awareness and appreciation of the social issues and diversity in Indonesia, as it portrays the realities and complexities of the Indonesian people.

The strengths of the series are its strong plot, realistic characters, excellent performances, authentic setting, and rich cultural values. The series has a captivating plot that keeps the viewers hooked and curious, as it mixes drama, comedy, romance, and suspense. The series has realistic characters that are relatable and likable, as they have their own flaws and strengths, and undergo realistic development. The series has excellent performances from the cast, who deliver natural and expressive acting, and have great chemistry with each other. The series has an authentic setting that reflects the Javanese culture, with its beautiful scenery, music, language, and costumes. The series has rich cultural values that educate and entertain the viewers, as it showcases the Javanese traditions, customs, and beliefs.

The weaknesses of the series are its limited production quality, outdated technology, and repetitive format. The series has a limited production quality, as it was made in the 1980s, with low budget and resources. The series has outdated technology, as it was filmed with analog cameras and equipment, and has poor sound and video quality. The series has a repetitive format, as it follows the same structure and formula in each episode, with a guest arriving, having a problem, and being helped by the Broto family.

The series is highly recommended for anyone who loves drama, comedy, romance, and culture. The series is suitable for all ages and backgrounds, as it has universal themes and messages that can appeal to anyone. The series is also a great way to learn and appreciate the Javanese culture and the Indonesian society, as it provides a realistic and positive representation of them. The series is a classic and timeless masterpiece that deserves to be watched and enjoyed by everyone.

Ramadhan di Balikpapan

Ramadhan telah tiba. Sejak menginjakan kaki di airport Sepinggan enam bulan yang lalu, wekker- ku seolah-olah berputar sangat cepat.  Tiba-tiba saja..,. ujug-ujug sudah memasuki bulan Ramadhan. Ngerti-ngerti wes poso. Puasa tahun pertama di Balikpapan... ........... ☘️......... Ahmad Yani Airport. Akhir September 2023. Flight- ku masih satu jam lagi. Setengah mengantuk aku menuju ke toilet bandara. Cuci muka.. .................. Terasa sangat berbeda. Di sana-sini interiorrnya masih under construction . Koridor dari tempat check-in menuju ruang tunggu penumpang masih polos. Bersih. Membosankan.   Hanya saja, yen ora keliru , waktu itu lukisan raksasa kary

Kamarintah, Republiken, Kamardikan dan Sego Godog..

Sekitar tahun 80-an hingga awal 90-an sebuah gerobak kecil mangkal di seberang jalan Rumah Sakit Tentara Dokter Asmir Salatiga.

Arsitekturnya cukup unik.  Luas dan asri. Itu adalah rumahnya Pak Arief Budiman dan Bu Leila Ch. Budiman...   The house is located in Kemiri Village, Kemiri Candi street, at the foot of Mount Merbabu.  It was built in 1985, after Arief Budiman returned from his doctoral studies at Harvard University. He choose Salatiga as his home because he felt alienated and disappointed by the rapid development and social in justice in Jakarta.  He wanted to live in a more peaceful and natural environment, where he could pursue his academic and artistic intere

Sugih tanpa Banda

Aku mau cerita dikit mengenai syair atau lirik lagu "Sugih Tanpa Banda". Ayok kita ngoceh ngalor ngidul lagi....sinambi ngopi karo nyawang lintang ngalih..  ..................

Negeri Para Ksatria Bra Tara

" Ada sebuah cerita negeri timur raya. Alamnya indah,  penduduknya ramah. Berbagai suku bangsa dan budayanya. Mereka menyebutnya Nusantara. Membentang bagai permata di khatulistiwa. Hijau hutannya, biru lautnya. Berlambang burung Garuda, tersemat di dada. Bhineka Tinggal Ika-lah jiwanya....." Nuswa artnya pulau tempat tinggal. Anta artinya laki-laki kesatria. Tara  artinya mulia.  So....
